By 1818 he was unable to hear his conversation partners, and for the last decade of his life he was, for all practical purposes, clinically deaf. This did not prevent him or his medical advisors from essaying an endless series of Beethoven's prospective cures or experimenting with a variety of hearing aids (most Ear commonly ear trumpets).
